Óbidos

[PT]

Óbidos, the photogenic village in the west known for its Chocolate Festival and for being a Christmas village once a year.

There were no prior expectations for this visit, the truth is that the first impression on entering the village, to be honest, was a huge shock/impact. Óbidos in the early days of August is already very touristy, with difficulty to park, the main streets full of people, tents and more tents of commerce despite the welcome medieval ambience that I so much enjoy.

Now the reason for the impact is as simple as this one: in the same week we visited Almeida! If you check the blog post about this other village you easily realize the quietness and silence of it. This is a consequence of being located in the interior side of the country, therefore much less touristy than Óbidos.

But that initial shock dissipated when we began to explore the (fortified) walls, and alleys, whereas the entrance to the castle had a very long queue. And here is where the experience became great, freedom to walk and observe the details, photograph, looking at the village from several points of view, etc..

I loved the notes of blue and yellow in the white of the houses, the flowers, the vases on the windows, that lady who was watering the plants and thought she had wet us. And in general, the contrast between what is directed to the tourists with all the medieval animation and recreation vs. the scent of the streets, the picturesque details, the backyards or terraces, and the format/set of the typical houses.

A final note is that besides the village and castle it's possible to see the Sanctuary of  Senhor Jesus da Pedra with its unique shape (last image of the post) and the Aqueduct that I did not photograph because it had to much surrounding visual pollution for my taste 😬.
